Look before you lodge – what you need to know before making a claim

Making a claim has never been easier. Technology and automation has helped streamline processes, improve claims efficiency and expedite payouts faster than ever before, but even a chat bot has its limitations.

Before lodging a claim, there are some simple steps that you can take from the outset to help your claim progress as quickly, easily and accurately as possible.
Here are our 4 top tips for when you’re lodging your next claim.

1.    Check your coverage

Before you do anything stop and review your policy. You don’t need to digest every word, but having a sound understanding of what is and isn’t covered can avoid potential surprises or disappointments when you go to make a claim. Key items to look at might be:

  • What’s covered
  • What’s excluded
  • Any excesses/deductibles that apply
  • Cover limits

2.    Document everything

This can sometimes feel cumbersome, inconvenient or laborious but keeping relevant records provides evidence to support your claim and helps ensure that any compensation you may be eligible for is fair. This might include:

  • Photographs or video of damage
  • Receipts/invoices
  • Police reports
  • Records of communication with relevant parties

3.    Prepare your claim

Before you go ahead and submit your claim, take the time to prepare all the relevant documents and information that you can. This includes fully and accurately completing the claim form and making sure you include any supporting documents requested.
Organise your information in a clear, concise way to help make the claims process as smooth and efficient as possible. By being prepared, you may expedite the assessment of your claim and perhaps get a response sooner than you expected.

4.    Engaging a claims advocate

Sometimes if a claim is particularly complex or high value, you may need to engage the services of a Claims Advocate. Claims X offers claims Advocacy services who work on your behalf to:

  • Navigate the claims process
  • Negotiate with Insurers
  • Ensure your claim is appropriately considered by your Insurers
  • Maximise your claim settlement
  • Save you time and worry
