The Apprenticeship Programme is designed for school leavers, new graduates, those seeking a career change, and wanting to build a new career in the insurance industry. This three-year programme provides extensive hands-on training in a supportive environment, with the opportunity to work in a variety of roles. You can also study to achieve a Certificate in Insurance Product Advice (APA), Certificate in Insurance Practice (CIP) and a BA honours degree (level 8) in Insurance Practice.

This programme was recommended by my college guidance counsellor when studying business at Technology University Dublin (TUD) as I was juggling the daily commute and two part-time jobs. The Apprenticeship Programme allowed me to begin my career in insurance while still attaining a Level 8 Degree. Collaborating with colleagues has significantly helped my understanding of the insurance industry, as their expertise and support have been invaluable.
I began the Apprenticeship Programme with no knowledge of insurance, but all my colleagues were extremely helpful and on hand to offer their guidance from the beginning no matter how big or small my questions were. From joining the programme, I have been given the opportunity to continue my career journey with Howden and take up the position of claims handler. I would encourage anyone that is looking for a career after they finish school to seriously consider applying for the Howden Apprenticeship Programme, if I was to go back now I would 100% do it all over again.

The Apprenticeship in Insurance practice runs over three years, and on completion you will receive a BA honours degree (level 8) in Insurance Practice awarded by the Atlantic Technological University in Sligo.
This programme is an earn-and-learn model, which will develop communication and collaboration skills and provide the foundation to kick-start your career as an insurance professional across key areas of our business, including underwriting, claims handling, or direct client advice.
Entry requires a minimum of two honours at a higher level in the Leaving Certificate or equivalent, with a pass in four additional subjects, including Maths and English or Irish.
For a candidate over 23, interviews or other selection tools may replace these minimum requirements.
No work experience is necessary, and the minimum age for programme is 18 years old.
The Apprenticeship Programme is fully funded by the Government of Ireland, while Howden covers the cost of the salary of the apprentice. Apprentices will work in a full-time role with study time set aside for online or face to-face lectures to enhance professional and technical knowledge.
