Your membership to the Angling Trust includes insurance cover for many of your day-to-day activities as a fishery or riparian. Please read on to find out what is covered.

Your Angling Trust insurance policy protects you, your business and your members for incidents arising from agreed recognised activities. The insurance includes elements of:

  • Professional Indemnity
  • Property insurance
  • Public and Product Liability
  • Employers’ Liability
  • Personal Accident
  • Directors and Officers (Management Liability)
Who is insured
  • Fishery affiliated to Angling Trust
  • Committee/board or owner of the fishery and their employees or volunteers
  • Riparian owners registered with Angling Trust - those who own waters or rights to use
  • Day permit holders registered as temporary members whilst undertaking their Angling activity at your fishery for the duration of their permit, are insured for Public Liability insurance only
  • Junior members under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a responsible adult
Recognised activities list

The agreed activities that Howden and the Angling Trust have negotiated are below.

We can arrange additional cover for other activities.

  • Management of your land and waters, including general site maintenance (reservoirs are not automatically covered, please call)
  • Day to day administration of your business
  • Management of fish stocks
  • Promotion and development of angling
  • Coaching by Angling Trust qualified coaches
  • Provision of Day Ticket Permits – Club/Fishery insured as host, members insured whilst in attendance and the guest anglers/ permit holder is insured whilst attending on the day of their permit.  Insurance Cover is only valid for the duration of the permit – Please note: the insurance only applies to members - The club or fishery must register their day permits as a day/temporary members those day permit holder temporary members will be insured for Public Liability insurance for the duration of their permit/temporary membership subject to the terms and conditions of the venue they are registering with.  If they don’t register as a temporary member the liability insurance will not apply.  The club/fishery will need to be able to identify those temporary members if a claim occurs
  • Competitions
  • Events and social activities (but not bonfires and fireworks)
  • Fundraising activities – (but not bouncy castles)
  • Use of boats/watercraft under 8m in length (provision /delivery of charter fishing is not insured)
  • Launch and recovery of boats including the use of winches.
  • Role of Fishery Bailiff
  • Pest control (but not using firearms)

Policy limits, excess and other key information

Public & Products Liability with a limit of indemnity of up to £10m any one occurrence and in the aggregate in respect of Products Liability protecting the club/syndicate  its members and club volunteers  against your legal liability for bodily injury to third parties and damage to their property and includes defence for obstruction, loss of amenities, trespass,  nuisance, or interference with any right of way, light air or water  whilst undertaking the Angling Trust recognised activity

Where a member club, syndicate, fishery or federation operates a reservoir – a specific reservoir endorsement applies which is a condition which must be met for Liability insurance cover to apply. Please see your evidence of insurance supplied by Angling Trust.

Please note that with effect from the 24 August 2020 to 24 August 2022 a communicable disease exclusion applied to this section of the insurance policy.


Use of power tools

Insurers will  not indemnify you for any legal Liability arising from the use of Power tools unless:

  • Power tools are used as per the manufacturers guidelines
  • Power tools are only used by competent Adult
  • Power tools are to be securely locked away when not in use
  • Use of chainsaws is permitted only by users wearing the appropriate PPE equipment.- IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT those using chainsaws should hold the appropriate qualifications


Use of subcontractors

If you are using subcontractors for example but not limited to  maintenance of land or building works  it is a condition of the insurance that all sub contractors engaged by you shall have in force Public Liability Insurance for third party bodily injury or damage to property with a minimum limit of indemnity of £5m throughout the duration of the contract with you.  You must hold and retain documentary evidence of the insurance prior to the commencement of the any contract.
 

This section of the policy extends to include Abuse cover to a limit of £2,500,000 in the aggregate for any incident occurring after 25 July 2016. The person accused of abuse/abuser or those who permitted abuse are not insured.

It is essential that you have a safeguarding policy and procedures in place.

The extension is written on a claims made basis of cover. It is essential that any claims or circumstances that might give rise to a claim are notified during the policy period in accordance with the terms of the policy wording otherwise the right for indemnity under this insurance will be forfeited.

Where you operate with Juniors or Vulnerable persons you should be adopting and adhering to the Angling Trust Safeguarding Policies details can be found here for abuse insurance to be available.

A limited marine extension applies to this policy but there is no cover for the provision of Charter Fishing: Fishing from a vessel carrying a passenger or passengers for hire that are engaged in recreational fishing. The policy does provide coverage when fishing on a third party's Charter boat. Please see your evidence of insurance supplied by Angling Trust for full details.
 

Professional Indemnity Insurance  with a limit up to £10m protecting the Federation if held responsible for breach of professional duty arising from negligent act error or omission committed in connection with those roles at the Federation  arising from your Angling Trust recognised Activity.  This section includes a libel and slander extension. Where coaches are appointed they are only insured to their level of qualification.

This section of the cover is written on a claims made basis and is Subject to retroactive date 25.7.16 It is essential that any claims or circumstances that might give rise to a claim are notified during the policy period in accordance with the terms of the policy wording otherwise the right for indemnity under this insurance will be forfeited

 

Covers you if held liable for an injury that an employee suffers during the course of employment. The policy includes injuries to volunteers and the maximum limit of cover is £10,000,000. (limited to £5m in respect of Terrorism) This is a legal requirement for any club that employs people paid or unpaid. 

Protection for the directors, officers, senior managers, committee members and trustees against claims arising from their decisions or actions taken whilst managing the club/syndicate.

Corporate Reimbursement Limit of Indemnity £5,000,000 in the aggregate – retroactive date 25 July 2017.

Excess £2,500 under Corporate Legal Liability section.

It is essential that any claims or circumstances that might give rise to a claim are notified during the policy period in accordance with the terms of the policy wording otherwise the right for indemnity under this insurance will be forfeited.
 

Personal accident insurance which provides “no fault” benefits should an injury happen to an insured person whilst undertaking an activity as recognised under your Angling Trust insurance policy.

We would highlight the following exclusions:

  • Theft or damage to the equipment unless in your care custody control at all times or otherwise secured in a locked hotel room or safe or other securely locked room or premises - evidence of forcible and violent entry or exit. 
  • Theft from unattended vehicles unless the item is out of sight in locked boot or locked storage compartment

Please note - loss by fraud or dishonesty of any individual partners, directors, employees, trustees, committee members or volunteers of yours, the loss must be notified to insurers within ten working days of its discovery by you for cover to apply.

Frequently asked questions

Any subcontractors you use must have their own Public Liability insurance in place for the duration of their contract with you, with coverage of £5m or more.

You need to get evidence of this before any works begin, and retain all contractors' insurance details for your records.

For your insurance cover to apply, power tools must be:

•   used as per the manufacturers' guidelines

•   used only by competent adult

•   securely locked away when not in use

•   chainsaw users must wear appropriate PPE equipment

In all other instances, your insurance will not cover the use of power tools.
